My Words are Worth Something and Other Revelations

For those of you who haven’t noticed, I’ve been gone a while and have returned reinvented.  I love writing children’s poetry and literature.  But not as much as I just love writing itself, pure and simple.  And I gotta tell ya (prepare for whining and excuses) I have a demanding, full time straight job, two active children, and my husband works nights five days a week.  I quickly discovered that getting my kids lit manuscripts prepared to send off to publishers and agents was daunting and time consuming and it would, at the rate I was doing it, likely take a decade to actually get a response.

I have a new strategy.  I want to be a full time writer, I want to be able to write for adults as well as kids, and, ideally, I want to teach and inspire.  I have a lot of pent up science knowledge and experiences with music, parenting, gardening, diet and exercise… and so many other things.  And I want to share.  And I don’t have many hours a day to do it.

My new approach is to write, write, write… write it out of my system, get it into other people’s brains, and get paid for it.  Now.  Not a decade from now.  So I’ve started doing freelance work.  I’m trying to resist the urge to push for big gigs right now until I have built up a decent portfolio and a bit of a name for myself.  Meanwhile, I will make it a goal to submit my children’s literature to agents at least once a month to keep that project rolling in the background.

So far, this has been fantastically fun!  I am finding lots of opportunities to write what I want, when I want.  I am creating the Katie Brand and getting my foot in the door.  Please give me your feedback and advice.   I need it! Thank you for making me a part of this community.  I have such respect for what you do and learn so much from your writing, art, and photography.  Write on.

Cheers and goodnight!
Katie B

Sounds like a solid plan to build up a portfolio. Have you considered finding on-line literary magazines and author community blogs to submit small works to? That can help spread your name and build a reputation.
